The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa'ad Abubakar III, has declared Friday April 21, 2023, as the day to mark the Eid-el-Fitr day celebration. The Sultan announced the sighting of the new moon of the month Shawwal in a broadcast in Sokoto on Thursday. The Islamic month of Shawwal comes after the 29 or 30 days of the month of Ramadan when Muslims across the world observe a month long fasting.

Nigerian Muslims Await the directive of the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa'ad Abubakar as Saudi Arabia has declared that Eid Al Fitr will begin on Friday after experts sighted the new moon, the Saudi Press Agency has reported. The announcement on Thursday evening was made by the kingdom's Supreme Court calling for people to head out to try to sight the moon from Thursday evening. Experts gathered at Sudair and Tamir astronomical observatories in the kingdom at around 5 pm on Thursday evening to set up telescopes and sighting equipment to look for the moon. The UAE and Egypt also declared the start of Eid Al Fitr from Friday. Saudi Arabia's International Astronomy Centre said countries that are satisfied with mathematical calculations of lunar cycles and do not require a specific sighting of the crescent moon could follow the kingdom in holding Eid on Friday even if unfavourable conditions meant it was not visible in person. The Council of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, has appointed Adetunji Kamardeen Bakare as the new Registrar of the University. . A statement made available to Journalists by the Public Relations Officer of the University, Abiodun Olarewaju, stated that Bakare until he was appointed Registrar, was serving as the College Secretary of the University’s Postgraduate College. He is the first Muslim principal officer to become the registrar of OAU since the establishment of the University in 1962.
